JCW Acoustic Baffles Installed at Ebbw Vale Learning Zone

JCW Acoustic Supplies was appointed to supply and install hanging acoustic baffles at Ebbw Vale Learning Zone in South Wales.

The installation covered three floors of classroom accommodation and involved approximately 1,220m² of acoustic treatment.

Working with main contractor Leadbitter Group, the JCW fitting team completed the installation over a 12-week programme before the Learning Zone opened in September 2012.

The project demonstrated how suspended sound absorption treatments could be incorporated across a substantial educational development containing classrooms, laboratories, creative spaces and communal facilities.

About Ebbw Vale Learning Zone

Ebbw Vale Learning Zone was developed as a centre for post-16 vocational and academic education in Blaenau Gwent.

The £33.5 million campus formed part of the wider regeneration of the former Corus Steelworks site at Ebbw Vale.

The development brought a broad range of educational facilities together within one campus, including:

  • General teaching classrooms
  • Construction technology facilities
  • Science laboratories
  • Art and creative spaces
  • A performance hall
  • A library
  • Shared circulation and communal areas

Each of these spaces had different functional requirements, but many included hard surfaces that could reflect sound and contribute to excessive reverberation.

The Acoustic Challenge in Educational Spaces

Classrooms need to support spoken communication between teachers and students. Where sound continues to reflect from hard walls, floors and ceilings, speech may become less distinct and the room can feel louder than necessary.

Common reflective surfaces in educational buildings may include:

  • Painted plasterboard walls
  • Glazing
  • Hard floor finishes
  • Exposed concrete or structural soffits
  • Tables, worktops and laboratory surfaces

When sound reflects repeatedly within a room, it creates reverberation. The amount of reverberation is influenced by the size and shape of the space, the materials used and the number of people occupying it.

The acoustic treatment at Ebbw Vale Learning Zone was intended to introduce additional absorption across the classroom areas and help control these internal reflections.

Why Hanging Acoustic Baffles Were Selected

JCW Hanging Acoustic Baffles are suspended vertically from the ceiling or structural soffit.

This arrangement allows sound to reach both faces of the absorptive element, making effective use of the available surface area.

Hanging baffles can be particularly useful where:

  • Wall space is limited
  • The ceiling is high or exposed
  • Services occupy part of the overhead area
  • A suspended grid ceiling is not suitable
  • Acoustic treatment must be distributed across a larger room

The baffles can be positioned according to the available ceiling layout while allowing coordination with lighting, ventilation, alarms and other building services.

The final arrangement must still provide suitable access to equipment and comply with the project’s fire, safety and maintenance requirements.

Sound Absorption Rather Than Soundproofing

The hanging baffles supplied for the Learning Zone were used as sound absorption treatments.

Sound absorption reduces reflections and reverberation within the room where the sound is generated.

Soundproofing serves a different purpose. It is intended to reduce noise passing between separate rooms or areas through walls, floors, ceilings, doors and other transmission paths.

Installing acoustic baffles within a classroom does not automatically prevent voices or activity being heard in an adjoining classroom.

Where sound insulation between rooms is also required, the complete separating construction may need to include suitable:

  • Partition walls
  • Doors and perimeter seals
  • Glazing
  • Ceiling and floor junctions
  • Ventilation treatments
  • Service-penetration details

A building may therefore require both sound absorption and soundproofing, with each treatment specified for a different acoustic objective.

Planning the Baffle Layout

The effectiveness of an acoustic treatment depends on more than the total number of panels or baffles installed.

The layout should consider:

  • The dimensions and volume of each room
  • The existing reflective finishes
  • The intended occupancy and activity
  • The available ceiling area
  • The location of lighting and ventilation
  • The spacing and suspension height of the baffles

Classrooms, laboratories and creative spaces may require different arrangements because their dimensions, furnishings and activities vary.

A performance hall or larger communal space may also behave differently from a standard teaching room, even where the same type of absorptive product is considered.

Coordinating Installation Across Three Floors

Installing approximately 1,220m² of hanging baffles across three floors required careful coordination with the wider construction programme.

The acoustic installation needed to account for:

  • Access to each classroom and work area
  • The progress of ceiling and finishing works
  • Completed lighting and mechanical services
  • Material storage and movement around the site
  • Safe access equipment for overhead installation
  • Protection of completed surfaces

Installing the baffles too early could have exposed them to damage from other trades. Installing them too late could have affected room completion and handover.

The JCW fitting team completed the work within a 12-week installation period, supporting the planned opening of the campus in September 2012.

Integrating Baffles with Building Services

Modern educational ceilings often contain several different building services.

These may include:

  • Smoke detectors and alarms
  • Sprinklers
  • Ventilation grilles and ducts
  • Projectors and presentation equipment
  • Cable containment

The baffle suspension layout must avoid obstructing these systems and preserve access for inspection and maintenance.

Spacing should also account for manufacturers’ requirements relating to lighting, sprinklers and other overhead equipment.

This coordination is an important part of a large installation and should be addressed before products are suspended from the completed ceiling or soffit.

Installation Quality and Consistency

Large acoustic installations need a consistent appearance as well as secure fixing.

Important installation considerations include:

  • Accurate baffle spacing
  • Consistent suspension heights
  • Secure and suitable fixings
  • Correct orientation
  • Alignment across adjoining areas
  • Avoiding damage to the panel surfaces

The supporting construction must be capable of carrying the installed system. Fixings should be selected for the particular soffit, ceiling or suspension arrangement rather than treated as generic accessories.

Any installation at height must also be planned and completed using appropriate access equipment and safe working procedures.
